Meaning
Plastic extrusion processes involve inflating a molten tube of low density polyethylene to create a thin, continuous web for packaging applications. Ldpe blown film production requires careful control of the blow-up ratio and frost line height to manage the mechanical properties and optical clarity of the finished product. The polymer is melted in an extruder and forced through a circular die, where air is introduced to expand the bubble.
As the melt rises, it is cooled by an air ring before being collapsed and wound onto rolls. This method is the standard for producing trash bags, liners and shrink wraps.
Cooling Rate
Heat removal determines the degree of crystallinity and the final transparency of the film. Rapid cooling results in smaller crystal structures, which improves the clarity and gloss of the material. If the bubble is not cooled evenly, thickness variations and gauge bands will appear on the finished roll.
The height of the frost line, where the polymer transitions from a melt to a solid, is the primary indicator of the cooling efficiency.
Resin Selection
Molecular weight distribution and branching in the polyethylene determine how the melt behaves under the tension of the bubble. Low density polyethylene is preferred for its high melt strength, which allows the bubble to remain stable even at high output rates. Moulders often blend different grades to balance the ease of processing with the puncture resistance required for the application.
Linear low density resins are frequently added to improve the toughness and seal strength of the web.
Surface Quality
Additives like slip and antiblock are necessary to prevent the inner surfaces of the bubble from sticking together. These chemicals are mixed into the resin and migrate to the surface as the film is wound. Without proper additive loading, the film may be impossible to open or could stick to the rollers of the conversion equipment.
Managing the balance between surface slip and the ability to print on the film is a constant challenge for the operator.
