Meaning
Infrared radiation directed at the interface of two polymer parts creates a localized melt pool that solidifies into a high-strength bond. This laser welding technique requires one component to be transparent to the laser wavelength while the other acts as an absorber. The heat is generated precisely at the joint line, which minimizes the thermal stress on the surrounding material.
It is used for assembling sensitive electronic housings and medical devices where vibration-based welding would cause damage.
Beam Absorption
Successful bonding relies on the ability of the bottom part to convert light energy into heat. Carbon black or specialized infrared dyes are added to the resin to facilitate this absorption. When the laser welding beam passes through the clear upper layer, it strikes the absorbing layer and initiates melting.
Weld Aesthetics
Precision control of the energy delivery results in a clean joint without the flash or particulates associated with ultrasonic welding. Because the process is non-contact, the external surfaces of the moulded parts remain free from marks or scratches.
Cycle Speed
Automated systems move the laser head or the part at high velocities to complete complex weld paths in seconds. Laser welding supports high-volume production by integrating directly into the assembly line.
