Meaning
International transport standards specify the performance requirements and testing protocols for plastic packaging designed to carry dangerous goods. This regulatory document, designated as ISO 16104, outlines the test methods for evaluating the structural integrity of polymer containers. It focuses on assessing packaging design types to ensure safety during global transit.
Compliance Testing
The standard prescribes a sequence of physical trials including drop tests, leakproofness tests, and internal pressure tests. Compliance with ISO 16104 requires that the containers survive these challenges without releasing their contents. The testing parameters are scaled based on the hazard level of the intended cargo.
These demanding tests reveal any underlying defects in moulding or resin selection. If a container fails, the moulder must re-evaluate either the wall thickness distribution or the choice of resin.
Material Validation
Manufacturers must verify that the chemical resistance of the polymer remains stable under load. The standard suggests pre-conditioning container samples with standard liquids to simulate long-term exposure before physical testing. This step accounts for environmental stress cracking and polymer degradation that occur in the presence of aggressive chemicals.
Quality Assurance
Achieving certification under this standard enables a moulder to stamp the containers with the official United Nations packaging mark. This mark verifies to shippers and customs officials that the packaging meets rigorous safety expectations. Continuous quality audits are necessary to maintain this certification across different production batches.
