Meaning
Machine assessment procedures measure the operating cycle time of an injection molding machine when it runs without material or mold cooling. Running a dry-cycle verification establishes the baseline mechanical speed of the clamp and ejection systems under standard conditions. This test separates the mechanical capabilities of the machine from the cooling and recovery phases of the molding process.
Performance Metric
Technicians measure the elapsed time for the clamp to close, build high tonnage, and open. These movements occur without plastic injection. Comparing this measured time to the manufacturer specification determines whether the machine is operating at peak efficiency.
Optimization Process
Removing the cooling and plasticizing times allows engineers to focus on the clamp speed, acceleration, and deceleration profiles. Adjusting the hydraulic valve response or the servo motor ramp rates can shave fractions of a second off the dry cycle time. For high volume packaging applications, reducing the dry cycle time directly increases the hourly throughput of the molding cell.
Hydraulic Health
A gradual increase in dry cycle time over successive production runs often indicates internal component wear, hydraulic oil degradation, or electrical controller delay. Clogged filters, worn pump seals, or failing proportional valves reduce the flow of hydraulic fluid, slowing the machine movements. Regular dry run tests capture these changes before they cause a complete machine breakdown or unplanned downtime, helping maintenance teams plan pump and valve overhauls.
