Meaning
High-performance powder metallurgy stainless steel provides extreme wear resistance for moulding components subjected to abrasive plastic compounds. This tooling material, known as böhler m390, contains high levels of carbon, chromium, and vanadium to withstand glass-filled resins. Molders select this grade to prevent premature gate erosion during high-volume production runs.
Wear Resistance
Abrasive filled resins quickly degrade standard tool steels. Incorporating böhler m390 into nozzle tips and gate inserts arrests this mechanical wear. The high volume of vanadium carbides in the microstructure prevents the wash-out of critical runner profiles.
This preservation maintains consistent fill pressures and reduces flash formation over long production cycles.
Tooling Longevity
Extended manufacturing cycles demand durable tooling to avoid unscheduled downtime. Using böhler m390 in the mold assembly increases the lifetime of gate orifices before rework is required. This durability keeps the cavity pressure within the specified limits of the process datasheet.
Less durable steels cause the part dimensions to drift as the gate area enlarges over time.
Corrosion Protection
Outgassing from corrosive polymers like polyvinyl chloride or flame-retardant additives attacks mold surfaces during the molding step. The high chromium content in böhler m390 protects the polished finish from acid-induced pitting. This defense is necessary when processing fluoropolymers that release hydrofluoric acid under high melt temperatures.
Protecting these cavity surfaces eliminates the need for frequent repolishing that changes the volumetric capacity of the gate. Polished surfaces remain smooth to ensure the molded parts eject without drag marks or surface scuffs. A stable tooling surface maintains the aesthetic requirements of the final molded component without altering the cycle time.
