Meaning
Functional chemical additives reduce the buildup of static electricity on the surface of plastic parts. Antistatic agents accomplish this by migrating to the outer layer and attracting moisture from the air. This moisture layer creates a conductive path that dissipates electrical charges before they can accumulate.
Chemical Action
Migratory behavior depends on the molecular structure and the compatibility of the additive with the polymer matrix. Additives of this type are often formulated as internal compounds mixed into the melt during the extrusion process. These internal variants diffuse to the outer layer at a rate governed by the crystallinity of the resin and the ambient humidity of the storage environment.
Once on the surface, they form a microscopic hydrophilic film.
Processing Impact
Additive migration can influence subsequent decoration and assembly steps. If the concentration is too high, the surface layer interferes with paint adhesion and ultrasonic welding. Moulders must monitor the dosage to prevent these issues while still achieving the desired decay time.
Moulding Outcome
Static dissipation prevents the accumulation of dust on high-aesthetic housings and reduces the risk of electrical shock during part ejection. These chemical additives are especially useful in packaging films and electronics enclosures. Improper selection can lead to surface haziness or greasy residues.
