Meaning
Filtration accessories designed to capture volatile organic emissions prevent hazardous or corrosive byproducts from reaching sensitive electronic sensors and the laboratory environment. In moisture analysis, an activated carbon gas trap removes interfering vapors released during the heating of polymer pellets, ensuring only moisture or carrier gas passes through. The operation is limited by the saturation point of the carbon bed, requiring regular replacement to avoid breakthrough.
Sensing Protection
High-density polymer resins often release additives and plasticizers when heated to their melting points for testing. These volatiles can condense on the mirrors or electrodes of moisture analyzers, degrading sensor sensitivity and drift stability over time. By routing the gas stream through a porous carbon media, the system binds these heavy organic molecules while allowing moisture to proceed to the detector.
This action maintains instrument calibration and reduces maintenance downtime in high-throughput moulding laboratories.
Melt Quality
Insufficient trapping of volatile gases can lead to incorrect moisture calculations, which directly impacts the process setting of injection moulding runs. When moisture is underestimated, the drying cycle for resin is cut short, leading to hydrolysis during molding. This degradation reduces the mechanical toughness of the finished parts.
Trap Maintenance
A regular schedule of weight monitoring or sensor drift analysis signals when the carbon bed has reached its absorption capacity. Saturated beds no longer retain organic gases, allowing them to deposit on the analytical sensors. Replacing the trap cartridge before this point ensures consistent moisture readings across different resin batches.
