Meaning
Surface topography metric that calculates the volume of material residing in the highest peaks of a texture. Analysis of vmp peak material volume identifies how much material is available to be worn down during the initial contact or break-in period. This value sits at the top of the material ratio curve and represents the most vulnerable part of the surface.
It is used to characterize the roughness of a moulded part.
Friction Behavior
Interaction between two sliding plastic surfaces is heavily influenced by the height and volume of these top features. A large vmp peak material volume often results in higher initial friction and the generation of wear debris. This debris can become trapped between parts and cause scratching or squeaking.
Design engineers specify lower peak volumes for components that require smooth mechanical movement.
Haptic Quality
Perception of softness or grip in a consumer product depends on the density of these microscopic peaks. Soft-touch resins often show a specific vmp peak material volume that allows the surface to deform slightly under finger pressure. Excessive peak volume can make a surface feel abrasive or dry to the touch.
This haptic feedback is a primary differentiator in electronic device housings.
Measurement Limit
Resolution of the optical profilometer must be sufficient to capture these small features accurately. Any vmp peak material volume reading depends on the lateral resolution of the sensor.
