Meaning
High-strength alpha-beta titanium alloys containing six percent aluminum and four percent vanadium are widely specified for demanding aerospace and ultrasonic tooling applications. Selecting Ti-6Al-4V titanium for the construction of ultrasonic welding horns ensures that the tool can withstand high fatigue stresses without cracking. This material offers a favorable combination of low density, high strength, and excellent acoustic properties.
It is the preferred choice for horns that weld complex or hard-to-join engineering polymers.
Acoustic Performance
The low acoustic damping of this alloy allows it to transmit high-frequency vibrational energy with minimal internal heating. Through the use of Ti-6Al-4V titanium, weld horns can operate continuously at twenty or forty kilohertz with high amplitude stability. This acoustic efficiency ensures that the maximum energy is delivered directly to the polymer joint line, resulting in short weld cycles.
Wear Protection
Although the alloy has high tensile strength, its surface is relatively soft and susceptible to abrasive wear. When using Ti-6Al-4V titanium horns to weld glass-reinforced resins, the active face of the tool must be coated with chromium or titanium nitride to prevent erosion. Without this protection, the abrasive glass fibers will rapidly erode the metal, altering the resonant frequency and amplitude profile of the horn.
Moulding Application
Beyond acoustic tooling, this material is sometimes used for specialized mold inserts that require high corrosion resistance and high strength. The low thermal conductivity of Ti-6Al-4V titanium can also be exploited to create localized thermal barriers within the mold steel.
