Meaning
Analytical gas extraction isolates volatile organic compounds from solid polymer matrices by applying controlled heating inside an inert carrier gas stream. Testing laboratories utilize thermal desorption recovery to collect residual solvents and volatile additives for gas chromatography analysis. The methodology determines chemical purity and outgassing characteristics of moulded parts destined for automotive or medical applications.
Application covers solid pellets or finished components, ending where thermal exposure causes polymer matrix pyrolysis.
Extraction Process
Sample material is placed within a quartz tube and heated under a regulated helium flow. Target volatile species vaporize from the polymer matrix without degrading the primary polymer chains. Carrier gas transports liberated compounds into a cold trap, where cryogenic cooling condenses the sample prior to injection into the chromatographic column.
Rapid reheating of the trap releases a concentrated plug of volatile analytes for separation and detection.
Outgassing Analysis
Measuring volatile releases identifies potential fogging or odor issues in sensitive end-use environments. High levels of residual solvents indicate incomplete devolatilization during polymerization or compounding operations. Identifying specific volatile species allows formulators to modify additive packages or adjust processing parameters to reduce emissions.
Quality Threshold
Automotive and medical specifications mandate strict upper limits for total volatile organic emissions. Exceeding outgassing limits results in part rejection due to interior windshield fogging or chemical leaching concerns. Regular testing ensures compliance with industry health and safety standards.
