Mirror Fidelity

Surface roughness at the sub micron level prevents diffuse scattering and preserves the image quality of the light source. High levels of specular reflection require perfectly polished steel tooling and high pressure to press the plastic against that surface. Any vibration during moulding leaves small visible waves in the reflection.

Gloss Measurement

Instruments measure the intensity of the light returning at the exact opposite angle to the incident ray. Dominant specular reflection yields a high gloss unit value on standardized gauges. Wear on the tool surface gradually reduces this value as micro scratches develop over thousands of cycles.

Cosmetic Sensitivity

Highly reflective parts show fingerprints and dust much more easily than textured pieces. Achieving consistent specular reflection across a large curved surface tests the uniformity of tool polishing. Scrap rates rise when these smooth surfaces reveal even tiny material bubbles.
