Meaning
Unit operations remove volatile organic solvents and residual monomers from liquid polymer solutions or melt streams through thermal separation and mass transfer. In solvent based plastic recycling and resin purification, solvent stripping isolates target polymers from dissolved wash solvents to yield pure resin pellets. The process operates by applying heat, reduced system pressure or stripping agents like steam or nitrogen to drive volatile components into gas phase.
Temperature boundaries must remain below polymer thermal degradation thresholds to prevent chain scission and discoloration.
Thermal Devolatilization
Flash evaporators and thin film evaporators maximize surface area exposure to promote rapid solvent vaporization. High viscosity melt pumps convey concentrate through heated vacuum chambers where volatile concentrations drop rapidly. Heat input must balance vaporization enthalpy demands without creating localized thermal hot spots in the melt stream.
Vacuum Extraction
Multistage vented extruders extract volatile solvents from concentrated polymer melts prior to strand pelletizing. Deep vacuum levels lower solvent boiling points, enabling extraction of high boiling point solvents at safe processing temperatures.
Residual Limit
Final residual solvent concentrations in recovered polymer must comply with food contact volatile limits. Efficient devolatilization reduces residual volatile organic compounds below parts per million thresholds needed for high value resin reuse.
