Meaning
Industrial vessel designed to hold and heat polymer pellets while circulating dry air to remove moisture before injection or extrusion. The resin drying hopper provides the residence time required for internal moisture to diffuse to the surface of the pellet where the desiccant air can carry it away.
Residence Capacity
Size of the resin drying hopper must be matched to the throughput of the moulding machine. If the press uses one hundred kilograms of plastic per hour and the material requires four hours of drying, the hopper must hold at least four hundred kilograms. Short-circuiting happens when new material falls straight to the bottom without being dried.
Airflow Pattern
Dry air enters the bottom of the cone and rises through the bed of pellets. Proper distribution of this air is necessary to avoid cold spots where the resin stays wet. Many designs use a diffuser cone to spread the air evenly across the entire diameter of the vessel.
Energy Efficiency
Insulation on the outside of the hopper prevents heat loss and reduces the cost of operation. Modern systems recover heat from the exhaust air to pre-warm the incoming air stream. This reduces the total energy consumption of the plant while maintaining the strict temperature control needed for sensitive engineering resins.
By monitoring the dew point of the return air, the system can also adjust the regeneration cycle of the desiccant beds to save power during periods of low humidity. This intelligent control prevents the over-drying of material which can be as harmful as under-drying for certain polymer grades.
