Meaning
Reclaimed plastic resin originates from manufactured products that have reached the end of their useful life. Sourced primarily from water bottles, automotive components, and optical discs, post-consumer polycarbonate is sorted, washed, and compounded to produce recycled resin. This material is blended with virgin polycarbonate to meet the mechanical and thermal requirements of new applications.
It does not include pre-consumer or industrial scrap generated during the primary molding process.
Material Degradation
During its first life cycle, the polymer is exposed to heat, moisture, and ultraviolet radiation, which can cause chain scission and reduce its molecular weight. This degradation decreases the melt viscosity and impact strength of the recycled resin. Compounders must monitor the melt flow index and make adjustments, such as adding chain extenders, to restore the mechanical properties.
Without these additives, parts molded from recycled resin can fail under impact load.
Contamination Management
Recycled streams often contain trace amounts of other polymers, coatings, and debris that can affect the quality of the molded part. Incompatible resins, such as polyethylene or ABS, form distinct phases that act as stress concentrators and reduce the clarity of the molded component. Extensive filtration and sorting processes are required to remove these contaminants before compounding.
Even small amounts of contamination can cause cosmetic defects like silver streaks or black spots.
Compounding Economics
Blending recycled material with virgin resin allows molders to meet environmental targets while managing material costs. The price of post-consumer polycarbonate is often tied to the cost of collection and sorting, which can make it less volatile than virgin resin prices. Molders must balance the lower cost of the recycled material against the potential increase in scrap rates due to material variability.
Compounding with flame retardants and impact modifiers can open new markets for this material in electronic housings and automotive parts. Since many consumer brands now mandate a minimum percentage of recycled content, securing a reliable supply of high-purity recycled resin is a strategic advantage for plastic converters.
