Meaning
High-performance amorphous thermoplastics feature diaryl sulfone repeating units along their aromatic polymer backbones. Utilizing polysulfone provides exceptional thermal stability, high heat deflection temperature, flame resistance, and hydrolytic stability across demanding service environments. The resin serves in medical devices, food processing equipment, automotive plumbing fittings, and aircraft interior parts, but suffers environmental stress cracking when exposed to polar organic solvents.
Thermal Stability
Aromatic ring structures in the polymer chain resist thermal degradation and oxidative attack up to continuous operating temperatures of one hundred sixty degrees Celsius. Glass transition temperatures around one hundred ninety degrees Celsius maintain mechanical stiffness and creep resistance under sustained mechanical loads. High raw resin cost limits its application to demanding structural parts where commodity engineering plastics fail.
Datasheet properties show minimal degradation after repeated steam sterilization cycles.
Melt Processing
Processing temperatures exceeding three hundred forty degrees Celsius require high-temperature barrel heaters and oil-heated molds. High melt viscosity demands high injection pressures and wide runners to fill complex part geometries without cold shoots. Inadequate pre-drying causes hydrolytic degradation during processing, reducing impact strength and causing splay marks on part surfaces.
Blending virgin resin with properly dried regrind preserves mechanical strength, but damp regrind rapidly hydrolyzes the polymer chain.
Environmental Resistance
Steam resistance enables long service life in repeated sterilization applications.
