Meaning
Mass transport mechanism describes the migration of small penetrant molecules through transient empty spaces between dynamic polymer chain segments. In packaging barrier evaluation and recycled polymer decontamination, polymer free volume diffusion determines the transport rate of gases, moisture, volatile contaminants and additives through solid plastic structures. The diffusion rate depends on polymer chain mobility, thermal expansion, fractional free volume and penetrant molecular size.
The mechanism operates in solid-state and rubbery polymers, terminating when the material enters a fully melted liquid state.
Transport Dynamic
Polymer chains undergo continuous localized thermal fluctuations, opening and closing sub-nanometre empty spaces within the amorphous matrix. Small volatile molecules hop between these temporary free volume pockets under the driving force of a concentration gradient. Amorphous polymers above their glass transition temperature possess large fractional free volume, leading to rapid molecular diffusion.
Semi-crystalline resins constrain free volume within amorphous channels surrounded by impermeable crystalline lamellae, reducing overall diffusion rates.
Decontamination Impact
Thermal stripping processes utilise high temperatures and deep vacuum to drive trapped contaminants out of recycled flake via molecular hopping. Raising reactor temperature increases chain mobility and expands fractional free volume, accelerating contaminant migration toward the surface for extraction. Volatile organic compounds diffuse out rapidly, whereas bulky multi-ring molecules require longer residence times due to spatial constraints within the chain mesh.
Recyclers tune thermal reactors to maximise free volume expansion without causing thermal polymer degradation.
Barrier Engineering
Packaging converters select resins with low intrinsic free volume to protect oxygen-sensitive foods and carbonated beverages. Orienting polymer chains through biaxial stretching packs molecules tighter, reducing free volume and lowering gas permeability. Post-consumer recycled resins containing branched chains or plasticisers exhibit altered free volume characteristics that can increase barrier permeability compared to prime virgin resin.
Permeation testing verifies that finished containers provide adequate shelf-life protection against atmospheric gas ingress.
