Meaning
Thermoforming hardware control represents the physical displacement sequence governing sheet stretching during hollow component creation. During production of deep drawn containers from amorphous polyethylene terephthalate sheets, plug assist mechanics determine material distribution by driving a mechanically heated polymer plunger into softened thermoplastic prior to vacuum application. This synchronized motion prevents excessive thinning at corners and base radii by drawing precise mass downward before pneumatic pressure finalizes part geometry.
The operational boundary stops where sheet temperature drops below the glass transition threshold, rendering mechanical displacement ineffective against rigid molecular chains.
Plunger Velocity
Pneumatic cylinder speed dictates initial contact force against the heated sheet during the descent phase. High velocity values generate excessive orientation stress inside high density polyethylene grades, resulting in immediate tear initiation along the sidewall. Slow descent rates allow premature localized cooling upon contact with the colder tool surface, creating uneven wall thickness profiles across the final component.
Operators calibrate hydraulic regulation valves to match thermal relaxation rates of specific homopolymer melts.
Thermal Gradient
Heater cartridge output inside the solid core regulates heat transfer efficiency toward the touching polymer boundary. Excessive thermal energy causes polymer sticking on the tip face, dragging material downward and creating heavy base pooling in polypropylene cups. Insufficient tip temperature chills the contacting area immediately, freezing local orientation prematurely and stopping proper radial flow during the secondary vacuum stage.
Technicians measure surface pyrometer readouts continuously to maintain stable processing conditions across long extrusion cycles.
Draft Angle
Side taper geometry determines how cleanly the solid plunger retracts from the newly formed thermoplastic cavity without distorting the interior walls. Vertical walls create high friction resistance during withdrawal, pulling the partially set polymer upward and ruining dimensional tolerances on precision trays. Proper draft angles allow smooth release once the vacuum locks the sheet against the cooled aluminium female mould.
Toolmakers grind these specific taper dimensions directly into the steel tooling during initial fabrication stages to guarantee repeatable part ejection.
