Meaning
Reference and counter electrochemical probes designed to function in organic solvents or molten salt environments enable the measurement of electrochemical potentials without the presence of water. Non aqueous electrodes are used in polymer synthesis and electrochemical polymerization of conductive plastics to prevent the degradation of moisture-sensitive materials. These probes utilize a salt bridge or a specialized ceramic frit to isolate the internal electrolyte from the non-aqueous reaction mixture.
By avoiding water, these electrodes prevent side reactions such as water oxidation or reduction, which would interfere with the polymer deposition process.
Solvent Compatibility
Moisture-sensitive electrochemical reactions require measuring systems that do not introduce water into the system. Non aqueous electrodes use dry organic solvents such as acetonitrile or propylene carbonate to dissolve the electrolyte salts. This choice of solvent ensures that the electrode remains stable and does not contaminate the reaction bath.
Precise potential measurements are achieved by choosing an internal reference couple that is stable in the chosen solvent.
Polymer Synthesis
Conducting polymers such as polyaniline or polypyrrole are often synthesized electrochemically in organic media to control their morphology. Utilizing non aqueous electrodes allows researchers to measure the deposition potential precisely, ensuring that the polymer chains grow with uniform length and conductivity. If water were present, it would compete with the monomer oxidation, leading to poorly formed polymer films.
Steady voltage control is maintained throughout the synthesis.
Potential Stability
Maintaining a stable reference potential in organic solvents is difficult due to junction potential drift. In a system using non aqueous electrodes, a silver/silver ion reference couple is often used to ensure a reproducible potential across many runs. This stability prevents shifts in the polymerization potential that would otherwise alter the material properties.
Regular replacement of the internal electrolyte solution is necessary to maintain accuracy.
