Meaning
Analytical spectroscopy technique that uses the magnetic properties of the carbon 13 isotope to determine the detailed chemical structure of polymer chains. Nmr carbon 13 provides information on the sequence of monomers, the presence of branches and the tacticity of the polymer. This method is more precise than infrared spectroscopy for identifying subtle differences in the backbone architecture.
It requires a relatively large sample and long acquisition times because the natural abundance of the carbon 13 isotope is low.
Tacticity Analysis
Spatial arrangement of side groups along the chain is resolved by observing the chemical shifts of the methyl and methine carbons. In polypropylene, this technique distinguishes between isotactic, syndiotactic and atactic sequences. This information is vital for predicting the crystallinity and melting point of the resin.
Copolymer Sequencing
Distribution of different monomers in a chain, such as ethylene and propylene in a rubber, is mapped through the connectivity of the carbon atoms. The technique can identify whether the monomers are arranged randomly or in blocks. This level of detail helps a moulder understand why two resins with the same density exhibit different shrinkage or impact resistance.
Quantitative Accuracy
Precision in the measurement depends on the use of relaxation agents and gated decoupling to eliminate the nuclear Overhauser effect.
