Meaning
Low molecular weight polymers known as metallocene oligomers are byproducts formed during the polymerization of olefins using metallocene catalysts. These catalysts produce polymers with a very narrow molecular weight distribution and high structural uniformity compared to traditional types. However, the specific reaction conditions can still generate a small fraction of short-chain molecules.
These oligomers are a concern in food packaging because their small size makes them more likely to migrate from the plastic into the food.
Migration Behavior
Mobility of these short chains is a function of their size and the density of the surrounding polymer matrix. Because metallocene resins often have a very consistent structure, the pathways for metallocene oligomers to move are well-defined. These molecules can travel to the surface of a film or container, where they may cause issues with heat sealing or print adhesion.
In food contact applications, the total amount of these migrants must be strictly controlled to meet safety standards.
Processing Characteristics
Presence of these small molecules can act as an internal lubricant, slightly lowering the melt viscosity of the resin. This can be an advantage in some moulding applications, but it must be balanced against the risk of surface blooming. If the concentration of metallocene oligomers is too high, they can leach out during the extrusion process and build up on the die lips.
This buildup eventually breaks off and causes defects in the finished part, necessitating frequent cleaning of the equipment.
Regulatory Compliance
Identification and quantification of these species are performed using solvent extraction and gas chromatography. Manufacturers use these tests to ensure that the metallocene oligomers stay below the limits defined by regulations like 21 cfr 177 1520. Because metallocene catalysts are often used to make high-purity resins, the level of oligomers is usually lower than in ziegler-natta grades.
Providing clear data on these migrants helps converters select the right material for sensitive packaging applications.
