Meaning
Electromagnetic transducer assemblies measure linear positioning to sub-micron accuracy in injection molding machine clamps and mold ejector plates. An lvdt sensor tracking plate movement prevents the mold from closing if the ejected part is not fully cleared from the core. This feedback system safeguards delicate tooling inserts against catastrophic damage from double-molding events.
Position Tracking
Continuous monitoring of mechanical movements relies on a sliding magnetic core that moves within three stationary coils. As the core moves, the voltage induced in the secondary coils changes in direct proportion to the physical travel. This analog signal is processed by the machine controller to track ejector stroke, clamp position, or mold open distance.
Because there is no physical contact between the core and the coils, the sensor does not suffer from mechanical wear, which ensures long-term reliability in high-cycle cleanroom environments.
Mold Protection
Unexpected failure of ejector plates to fully return to their home position can damage expensive tooling during the mold-close phase. The lvdt sensor registers even a fraction of a millimeter of ejector plate displacement. If the plate has not fully retracted, the sensor triggers an immediate clamp stop, preventing the mold from closing.
Stroke Calibration
Machine setup sheets require precise stroke numbers to ensure consistent cycle times. Operators can set the ejector forward and back limits using the real-time feedback from the sensor. This eliminates the need for manual trial-and-error adjustments, reducing setup times and protecting the mold during tool changes.
