Meaning
Financial guarantees issued by a bank ensure that a seller receives payment from a buyer once specific conditions are met. An irrevocable letter of credit cannot be amended or cancelled without the consent of all parties involved, including the buyer, the seller, and the issuing bank. This instrument is widely used to secure large shipments of raw materials or capital equipment.
Payment Security
In the global resin trade, an irrevocable letter of credit protects both the polymer supplier and the purchasing moulder. The resin supplier is guaranteed payment as long as they present the required shipping documents, such as the bill of lading and quality certificates, to the bank. This guarantee eliminates the risk of non-payment due to buyer insolvency or currency fluctuations.
For the moulder, it ensures that the bank only releases the funds after the seller proves that the material has been shipped.
Material Acquisition
Securing resin shipments through this method is especially common when purchasing high-performance engineering plastics from foreign manufacturers. It enables moulders to establish stable supply lines with new international suppliers.
Transaction Cost
The use of this payment method involves fees that depend on the creditworthiness of the buyer and the complexity of the trade terms. These bank fees increase the overall sourcing cost of the polymer resin. However, the protection against supply disruptions and unpaid balances often justifies the expense for high-volume transactions.
