Meaning
Sorting technology separates different types of polymers using optical or physical properties. Recyclers install inline automated scrap sorting systems to remove contaminants from a moving stream of shredded plastic. These machines use near infrared sensors to identify the resin type of every flake.
They then use air jets to blow unwanted materials into a separate bin.
Material Recovery
High purity regrind is the result of effective sorting. The system distinguishes between polyethylene and polypropylene even when they look identical to the human eye. This allows a moulder to reuse scrap without compromising the mechanical properties of the new part.
Contamination Removal
Foreign objects like metal, paper or different polymer grades are ejected from the line. Near infrared cameras detect the chemical signature of the plastic in milliseconds. Automated removal is much faster and more accurate than manual sorting.
Operational Efficiency
Continuous processing reduces the need for large storage silos between stages. The inline automated scrap sorting system handles several tons of material per hour. By integrating the sorter directly into the recycling line, the facility reduces labor costs and energy consumption.
Modern systems provide data on the composition of the incoming scrap to help track supplier quality.
