Meaning
Mechanical components transfer the force of the molten plastic to a sensor located behind an ejector pin. Using an indirect cavity pressure pin allows a moulder to monitor the process without placing a sensor directly in contact with the melt. The pressure from the plastic pushes the ejector pin, which then presses against a load cell.
This setup is common in tools where space for a direct sensor is limited.
Force Transmission
Accuracy depends on the free movement of the ejector pin within its bore. Friction or plastic flashing around the pin can lead to false readings. Regular maintenance ensures the pin slides easily to provide a true representation of the cavity pressure.
Sensor Protection
Isolating the transducer from the melt protects it from high temperatures and abrasive resins. The indirect cavity pressure pin acts as a thermal and physical buffer. This extends the life of the sensor in demanding applications like glass filled nylon moulding.
Installation Geometry
Positioning the pin requires careful consideration of the ejector plate layout. The sensor must be seated in a pocket that is perfectly aligned with the pin axis. Incorrect alignment causes side loading which damages the sensor and provides inaccurate data.
Proper installation allows for the monitoring of multiple cavities using a single data acquisition unit.
