Meaning
Catalytic purification reactors treat circular pyrolysis oils or unrefined chemical recycling hydrocarbons with high-pressure hydrogen gas to remove heteroatom impurities and saturate olefins. Chemical reactions take place over fixed catalyst beds at elevated temperatures, stripping out chlorine, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen while converting diolefins into stable paraffins. Treatment prepares recycled oil for introduction into fluid catalytic crackers or ethylene steam crackers without poisoning sensitive plant catalysts.
Heavy metal contamination or excessive particle loading marks the limit where upstream guard beds must intercept incoming feed.
Catalytic Decontamination
High-pressure vessels receive liquid pyrolysis oil derived from mixed plastic sorting facilities. Inside the hydrotreater, nickel-molybdenum or cobalt-molybdenum catalyst beds break down chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, forming gaseous hydrogen chloride that downstream scrubbers neutralize. Diolefins saturate under hydrogen pressures reaching one hundred bar, eliminating gumming tendencies that cause fouling in cracker preheaters.
If silicon from personal care products or silicone sealants enters the oil stream, catalyst pores suffer rapid deactivation. Bed maintenance requires regular monitoring of differential pressures to prevent emergency bypass events.
Contaminant Removal
Resin suppliers rely on hydrotreated feedstocks to guarantee that virgin-grade polymers produced via chemical recycling meet strict chemical compliance standards. Unchecked impurities in cracker feeds migrate into polymer-grade ethylene, altering catalyst activity during gas-phase or slurry-loop polymerization. Resulting polymer lots display wide variations in melt flow index and molecular weight distribution.
Injection moulders processing erratic resin grades face short shots, flash defects, and inconsistent part shrinkage across cavity tools.
Reactor Operation
Temperature and hydrogen partial pressure dictate the degree of heteroatom extraction within the vessel. Operating conditions must balance energy consumption against complete impurity elimination. The industrial hydrotreater secures chemical feed purity required for manufacturing virgin-spec circular plastics.
