Meaning
Measurement apparatus used to determine the specific gravity of solids or liquids through the application of buoyancy forces. A hydrostatic balance provides the precision necessary to verify the mineral filler content in reinforced polymers. This instrument compares the dry weight of a sample against its weight when submerged in a reference liquid.
Precision Weighing
High resolution load cells inside the unit detect the minute differences caused by air bubbles or surface tension on the sample. Using a hydrostatic balance allows a technician to identify density variations as small as 0.001 grams per cubic centimetre in a moulded test plaque. This level of detail is necessary when qualifying medical grade resins that must meet tight density specifications to ensure consistent performance in the field.
Temperature Compensation
Density measurements change as the temperature of the immersion fluid fluctuates during the day. Modern versions of the hydrostatic balance include integrated thermal sensors to adjust the buoyancy calculation automatically. Keeping the liquid at a constant temperature ensures that the data from the morning shift matches the data from the night shift.
Material Consistency
Moulding shops use this equipment to audit incoming resin batches for moisture or contamination. If the density recorded by the hydrostatic balance deviates from the material datasheet, it indicates a change in the base resin or the additive package. Regular calibration of the balance is a requirement for maintaining an iso certified quality system.
