Meaning
Elastomeric and plastic barriers composed of fluorinated polymers prevent fluid leakage in high-temperature or chemically aggressive moulding environments. Industrial machines rely on fluoropolymer seals to contain hydraulic fluids and heat transfer oils at temperatures exceeding two hundred degrees Celsius. These specialized barriers prevent contamination during the compounding and moulding of high-performance engineering plastics.
Their performance is bounded by the mechanical stress limits of the housing grooves.
Material Resistance
Inert chemical structures make these components highly resistant to aggressive solvents, acidic byproducts, and synthetic lubricants. When choosing material configurations, fluoropolymer seals outperform standard nitrile or silicone variants in contact with corrosive fluorinated monomers. The carbon to fluorine bond provides the molecular stability needed to survive long production runs without swelling or cracking.
This chemical inertness prevents material degradation and avoids the contamination of raw resin batches in medical moulding applications, ensuring that no decomposed rubber fragments enter the polymer melt.
Mechanical Sealability
Resistance to compression set determines how long a barrier can maintain its force against the mating surfaces. Because fluoropolymer seals can exhibit higher stiffness than hydrocarbon rubbers, the groove geometry must be designed to accommodate their specific deformation behavior. Improper groove dimensions lead to localized wear and subsequent pressure loss during the injection stroke.
Tooling designers specify precise gland volumes to ensure the barrier functions correctly.
Thermal Stability
Continuous operation at elevated temperatures requires compounds that do not soften or outgas. In moulding environments, fluoropolymer seals maintain their structural integrity where standard elastomers would suffer thermal cracking or embrittlement. This resilience reduces the frequency of maintenance shutdowns for high-temperature tooling.
Stable operation prevents pressure loss in the oil heating channels.
