Meaning
Polymerization reactors measure the proportion of gas feed converted into polymer chains during the reaction cycle. In the production of polyethylene, ethylene conversion efficiency determines the yield of resin generated per unit of monomer introduced into the reactor. High efficiency reduces the volume of unreacted gas that must be recycled through the recovery system.
This variable is set during the catalytic polymerization step of resin synthesis.
Monomer Conversion
Catalyst selection and reactor temperature are the primary process controls for this chemical variable. High ethylene conversion efficiency minimizes the operating cost of the polymer plant by reducing the energy needed for gas compression and separation. Low efficiency rises the production cost of the virgin resin, directly impacting polymer sourcing budgets.
Resin Quality
Incomplete conversion leaves residual low molecular weight fractions within the polymer matrix. Poor ethylene conversion efficiency raises the concentration of volatile organic compounds in the resin. These volatiles create odor issues in food-packaging films.
Processing Impact
Moulding plants do not directly control polymerization, but they suffer from the resulting material variations. Fluctuations in the ethylene conversion efficiency alter the molecular weight distribution of the polyethylene. These changes shift the viscosity of the melt during high-speed injection, leading to unpredictable part shrinkage.
Sourcing teams use density and melt flow data to detect these polymerization shifts before the resin enters the production line.
