Meaning
Metrological process creates a physical or mathematical reference from the imperfect surface of a manufactured part. Effective datum simulation is necessary for aligning a moulded component to its theoretical coordinate system. This step occurs at the beginning of every automated inspection routine.
Contact Interface
Physical locators on a fixture represent the planes and axes from which all other measurements are taken. When datum simulation is performed on a coordinate measuring machine, the software calculates the best fit based on the points touched by the probe. This method accounts for the slight surface variations inherent in the injection moulding process.
A stable reference prevents the accumulation of measurement errors.
Geometric Alignment
Establishing a consistent frame of reference allows for the accurate evaluation of position and profile tolerances. Because datum simulation relies on the most stable features of the part, it minimizes the impact of local defects on the overall result. The sequence of datum selection follows the precedence defined on the engineering drawing.
Primary datums constrain the most degrees of freedom, while secondary and tertiary datums lock the remaining rotation and translation. This logical structure ensures that parts are inspected exactly as they are designed to function.
Tolerance Evaluation
Reliable results depend on the quality of the simulated surfaces. Accurate datum simulation provides the foundation for all subsequent dimensional checks. The integrity of the data is confirmed through repeatability studies.
