Meaning
Hygroscopic chemical compound used for environmental moisture control during the transport and storage of raw materials. Polyesters and polyamides suffer from hydrolytic degradation when processed with excess moisture, making calcium chloride desiccant a necessary preventive tool in bulk resin shipping.
Absorption Capacity
Dry calcium chloride absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and converts it into a liquid brine solution. In polymer transport, calcium chloride desiccant keeps the relative humidity inside the container below the threshold where condensation occurs. This salt absorbs several times its own weight in water before reaching its limit.
Chemical Action
This chemical compound binds water molecules through a hydration reaction that transforms the solid salt into a hydrate. Unlike silica gel, calcium chloride desiccant changes phase during the absorption process. It turns from dry granules into a thick gel or brine, which prevents the re-release of moisture even at elevated shipping temperatures.
Package Integrity
Industrial desiccants must be sealed in breathable but leak-proof packaging to prevent the brine from escaping. When used to protect resin shipments, the calcium chloride desiccant is housed in specialized Tyvek bags that allow water vapour to enter while keeping the corrosive liquid salt contained. Leakage of the brine can corrode transport containers and ruin the raw materials.
