Meaning
Gravitational centering of the injection screw barrel assembly ensures uniform distribution of melt pressure across the mould cavity gate. Apex alignment functions as the mechanical requirement for parallelism between the injection unit axis and the platens. Deviations in this spatial orientation trigger uneven cooling rates and inconsistent wall thickness in thin-walled polypropylene containers.
Precision mechanical dial indicators or laser sensors detect these deviations during the cold setup phase of production.
Moulding Control
Proper positioning prevents asymmetric shear stress during the filling stage of a thermoplastic moulding cycle. High pressure injection demands that the nozzle contact force remains distributed equally around the sprue bushing to avoid resin leakage or flashing. When the nozzle applies force off center, internal strain builds within the part, causing localized weaknesses that lead to premature mechanical failure.
Regrind percentages amplify these defects as recycled material exhibits lower melt flow consistency than virgin resin.
Tooling Geometry
Correct nozzle contact is a function of the stationary platen squareness relative to the guide rails. If the guide rails sag over time, the entire injection unit loses the required orientation regardless of operator adjustments. Heavy multi-cavity moulds require rigid tie bar support to maintain this spatial relationship under the high clamp pressures needed for large scale components.
Worn toggle links or uneven tie bar stretch eventually shift the centre of the mould, rendering manual centring ineffective.
Process Stability
Thermal expansion of the barrel assembly during steady state operation necessitates periodic verification of these alignment settings. Cold start conditions create a distinct profile from thermal equilibrium, meaning the nozzle position shifts as temperatures rise. Moulders verify these settings once the machine reaches constant heat to ensure that the cavity filling velocity remains identical across all cycles.
Consistent positioning reduces the scrap rate caused by parting line mismatch and irregular surface finishes on parts intended for tight tolerance assembly.
