Meaning
Epoxy-functional styrene-acrylic oligomers designed for chain extension of polycondensates represent a class of processing additives that restore molecular weight to degraded polymers. Among these, adr 4468 provides reactive epoxy groups that bind with terminal carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of polyesters during extrusion.
Reaction Mechanism
High-density reaction sites along the oligomeric backbone drive the chemical activity of this additive. The epoxy rings of adr 4468 open rapidly under melt conditions to form covalent bonds with the polymer chains. This branching increases the molecular weight of the recycled resin.
Crosslinking must be avoided by maintaining tight temperature control in the extruder.
Viscosity Recovery
Melt strength enhancements depend directly on the dosage of the additive and the initial moisture levels of the polyesters. In regrind processing, adr 4468 restores the melt flow index of poly(lactic acid) to a level comparable to virgin resin, allowing higher blend ratios without sacrificing process stability. Moulders observe a reduction in part flash and parison sag.
The resultant melt viscosity becomes more uniform across the production run.
Processing Limit
Reaction kinetics during reactive extrusion require a minimum residence time to ensure complete consumption of the epoxy groups. Unreacted adr 4468 can lead to secondary reactions or mold deposits during subsequent molding cycles. Excessive amounts of the additive yield gel particles that compromise the optical clarity and tensile properties of thin films.
Thermoprocessing parameters must balance melt temperature with screw speed to achieve the desired degree of branching without inducing localized gelation, and this narrow thermal window restricts the use of the additive in high-heat processes.
