Meaning
Specialized moulds produce containers with a very high ratio of flow length to wall thickness. High speed injection relies on a thin wall packaging tool to create items like yogurt cups and margarine tubs. These tools must withstand massive internal pressures during the rapid filling phase.
They often feature complex venting systems to prevent air traps in the thin sections.
Pressure Resistance
High strength steels are used to prevent the mould from deforming under the injection load. The clamping force required for a thin wall packaging tool is often much higher than for standard moulding. Every component must be rigid enough to maintain a consistent wall thickness across the entire part.
Cooling Speed
Rapid heat removal is the only way to achieve the short cycle times required for profit. Beryllium copper inserts or conformal cooling channels are often used to pull heat away from the thin walls. Faster cooling allows the part to be ejected sooner, which increases the total output of the machine.
Structural Rigidity
Precise alignment of the core and the cavity is essential to prevent wall thickness variation. Even a small shift in the tool can cause the part to be thinner on one side. This imbalance leads to warping and failure during the filling or capping of the container.
A well built tool maintains this alignment over millions of cycles.
