Meaning
Series of stationary, geometric baffles placed inside the nozzle of an injection molding machine or extruder barrel homogenizes the polymer melt. This static mixing insert splits, rotates and recombines the flowing plastic stream, eliminating thermal gradients and blending pigments or additives evenly. By mechanically mixing the melt without moving parts, the insert ensures that the polymer entering the mold or die has a uniform temperature and composition.
Thermal Homogenization
Temperature variations across the melt stream can cause uneven flow and warpage in the molded part. The mixing insert breaks up these hot and cold layers, distributing the thermal energy evenly across the cross-section of the flow. This thermal uniformity reduces viscosity differences, which helps stabilize the injection process and improve the consistency of the part.
Flow Interspersion
Pigments, masterbatches, and regrind are often difficult to distribute evenly using only the mixing action of the extruder screw. The intricate channels of the insert force the polymer to blend thoroughly, eliminating color streaks and cosmetic defects. This thorough mixing allows molders to reduce pigment loading while maintaining excellent color consistency.
Color Distribution
Using these static mixers improves part quality and allows for a more stable process window, although it can slightly increase the pressure drop across the nozzle. The benefit of consistent melt quality and reduced color scrap outweighs the minor pressure loss in most precision molding applications. The insert is a cost-effective upgrade for standard injection units.
