Meaning
Shredded fragments of used polypropylene parts that have been recovered and prepared for reuse in the plastics industry. High quality recycled polypropylene flake is typically sourced from automotive components, packaging crates, electronic housings or household goods.
Physical Quality
Particle size distribution affects the melting rate and the consistency of the resin during the plasticization stage. Good quality recycled polypropylene flake must be free from moisture and contamination by other resins like polyethylene or polystyrene.
Mechanical Performance
Repeated heat cycles during the initial life of the part and the subsequent recycling process can reduce the impact strength of the material. Incorporating recycled polypropylene flake into a new product often requires the addition of impact modifiers to restore the toughness lost through thermal degradation.
Output Stability
High levels of dust in the regrind can lead to inconsistent feeding and the formation of voids in the final part. Monitoring the contamination levels ensures that the recycled material does not clog the melt filters or cause surface defects that would lead to the rejection of the production run. This control over the input stream allows the processor to maintain high yields and avoid the downtime associated with frequent cleaning of the extrusion screw.
