Meaning
Granulated material derived from post-consumer or post-industrial high density polyethylene products that have been cleaned and shredded for further processing. Processed recycled hdpe flake functions as a secondary raw material for extrusion and blow moulding applications.
Production Path
Sorting bottles by colour and removing labels precedes the mechanical grinding stage that creates the uniform fragments. This recycled hdpe flake undergoes multiple wash cycles to remove residues of detergents or food oils that would otherwise cause odours during the melting phase.
Processing Variable
Blending these flakes with virgin pellets helps to stabilize the melt flow index and ensure that the material behaves predictably in the tool. The bulk density of recycled hdpe flake is notably lower than that of pellets, which necessitates the use of specialized feeding equipment to prevent bridging in the hopper.
Economic Factor
Sourcing high quality regrind reduces the overall carbon footprint of the manufacturing operation and lowers the material cost per unit. Variations in the source material can lead to fluctuations in the physical properties of the final part, requiring the moulder to implement rigorous testing for each incoming lot. This testing covers density, color, moisture content and the presence of volatile contaminants to ensure the batch meets the internal quality standard.
