Meaning
Electronic communication tags embedded directly into moulded plastic parts or mounted on injection tooling enable automated tracking of assets and automatic loading of processing parameters. A radio frequency transponder utilizes an internal microchip and antenna to transmit stored data to a reader without requiring a direct line of sight. This technology allows moulding facilities to match each tool with its specific machine settings and record the production history of individual components.
Mould Identification
Mounting a ruggedized tag onto the base of an injection mould prevents human error during changeovers by automatically sending the correct temperature profiles to the hot runner controller. When the press clamps onto the tool, the machine retrieves the optimal injection speed and cooling times directly from the radio frequency transponder on the mould. This automatic configuration shortens setup times and prevents accidental damage caused by incorrect processing variables.
Material Sourcing
Resin suppliers attach these tags to polymer bulk bags to provide automated traceability through the supply chain. Handheld readers scan the bag to instantly verify the batch number, polymer grade, and moisture content before the material is loaded into the drying hopper. This safeguard prevents the contamination of the feed line with incorrect or unverified resin grades.
Part Traceability
Medical moulders encapsulate these microchips within high-value plastic components to satisfy tracking regulations. The embedded chip survives the high pressure of the injection moulding process.
