Meaning
Probability that a conforming polymer batch or moulded part is falsely rejected during quality control testing due to the influence of measurement uncertainty. In injection moulding operations, producer risk increases when the testing equipment has high variability relative to the product’s tolerance limits. This statistical probability directly affects the manufacturing economy by leading to the unnecessary scrapping of good resin or parts.
Process Control
Calibrating melt flow indexers and tensile testers reduces the variability of the measurement system. When the tester has a high standard deviation, the guardbands used for quality control must be set further from the specification limits to protect the customer. This action increases the producer risk, which forces the moulder to reject compliant batches that are close to the specification limits.
Defect Reduction
False rejections of polymer batches interrupt the production schedule and lead to machine downtime. To minimize this probability, moulders invest in high-precision testing instruments with lower measurement uncertainty. Reducing this risk prevents the waste of conforming materials and ensures a smoother transition when using regrind or recycled resin blends.
Financial Cost
Scrapping compliant parts or returning good resin batches to the supplier generates unnecessary shipping and material costs. Controlling this metrological risk through improved testing methods directly improves the net margin of the injection moulding facility.
