Meaning
Storage fees apply when shipping containers remain on the terminal grounds beyond the contractually agreed period. These port demurrage penalties are calculated on a daily basis and typically increase in severity the longer the cargo stays in the yard. For resin importers, these costs can quickly erode the thin margins associated with commodity polymers like polyethylene or polypropylene.
Supply Friction
Congestion at major shipping hubs often prevents the timely pickup of arriving resin batches. When port demurrage penalties accumulate, they indicate a breakdown in the coordination between the ocean carrier, the terminal operator and the local drayage provider. Delays may stem from labor shortages or equipment unavailability that keep the container grounded.
Financial Impact
Accumulated charges represent a direct increase in the landed cost of the material. Unlike ocean freight which is often negotiated in advance, port demurrage penalties are variable expenses that can disrupt the financial planning of a moulding operation. A processor who fails to clear a large shipment of virgin resin within the five day free window might see an unplanned cost increase of several hundred dollars per container every day.
Mitigation Strategy
Procurement teams often negotiate extended free time as part of their annual volume contracts with shipping lines. While standard terms might offer only three or four days, larger importers can sometimes secure up to fourteen days to account for potential inland transport delays. Efficient document preparation and early customs filing remain the most effective ways to avoid these fees entirely, ensuring that the material moves to the production plant before the free period expires.
