Meaning
Volatile additive loss defines the movement of chemical stabilizers from a polymer matrix toward a surface or into an adjacent contact medium. plasticizer migration occurs when molecules move through the internal free volume of a resin, driven by a concentration gradient or thermal excitation. This phenomenon alters the physical property profile of the finished part by reducing flexibility and increasing brittleness over the service life. It stops applying when the system reaches chemical equilibrium or when the concentration of the mobile agent falls below the threshold required for detectable surface accumulation.
Migration Kinetics
Chemical diffusion depends on the molecular weight of the additive and the internal density of the host resin. High ambient temperatures increase the free volume within the polymer chain network, which facilitates faster transport of the additive to the boundary layer. Heavy loads and high pressure environments accelerate the rate at which substances bloom onto the exterior of a moulded component.
Lowering the processing temperature helps restrict the initial mobility of these agents during the cooling phase of production.
Economic Consequences
Part rejections arise when surface deposits interfere with decorative finishing or functional bonding operations. Virgin resin formulations often contain stabilizers tailored to specific environmental exposures, whereas regrind introduces unknown additive ratios that change the diffusion rate unexpectedly. Datasheet values represent the optimal concentration of an agent under laboratory control but rarely predict the real world degradation seen in long term use.
A failure to account for these shifts leads to premature cracking or surface tacky films that render a moulded part unfit for assembly.
Material Specification
Design engineers select specific polymers based on their affinity for particular additives to prevent unwanted leaching in sensitive applications. Compatibility levels vary between crystalline and amorphous regions of the molecular structure, creating non uniform depletion zones inside the part. This relationship dictates the selection of non fugitive alternatives for medical or food contact components.
Standard testing protocols measure the weight loss of a sample after immersion in solvent to predict how a specific compound performs across the predicted usage cycle.
