Meaning
A mechanical sensing component converts physical force into a change in electrical resistance through the effect of semiconductor strain. This piezoresistive transducer utilizes the bulk property of silicon or similar crystals to modify electron mobility when exposed to deformation. Precise output depends upon the orientation of the crystalline structure relative to the applied stress field.
Pressure Dynamics
Melt pressure monitoring relies on this measurement method to detect fluctuations during the injection phase within a mould cavity. Deviations from the target resistance signal indicate issues such as improper viscosity or restricted flow paths. Consistency in signal reproduction allows controllers to adjust packing force in real time.
Accurate cavity sensing relies on the stability of the bond between the sensor diaphragm and the housing, which prevents false readings caused by thermal expansion.
Material Performance
Polymers exert varying degrees of stress on sensor surfaces depending on the filler content and the melt temperature. Higher glass transition temperatures require sensors that maintain sensitivity without drifting during prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Virgin resin provides a predictable response under load compared to regrind batches that contain contaminants or degraded chains.
Fluctuations in the additive package change the friction coefficient against the transducer face, which alters the registered force even when hydraulic pressure remains constant.
Output Validation
Datasheets provide nominal sensitivity values measured under laboratory conditions that differ from the environment inside a production tool. Field calibration corrects for mounting strain and the influence of the specific machine interface. Reliable signals require that the installation torque remains within the range specified by the sensor manufacturer to avoid pre-stressing the element.
Properly installed equipment tracks the internal state of the material accurately throughout the entire injection cycle.
