Meaning
Component structural design establishes a baseline uniform dimension representing the primary cross-sectional depth of a moulded shell. This nominal wall thickness governs molten plastic flow lengths, mechanical load resistance and required cooling times across the entire mould cavity. Every rib, boss, gusset and corner radius is sized as a proportional percentage of this central parameter.
The value ceases to dictate processing conditions in regions where deliberate functional thin-wall membranes or thick mounting lugs supersede baseline geometry.
Filling Dynamics
Viscous resistance climbs inversely with the cube of cavity clearance during the filling phase. Establishing a sufficient nominal wall thickness enables injection pressures to push molten polymer through long flow lengths before the material cools below its glass transition or crystallization point. Choosing an excessively thin cross section demands extreme injection pressures, elevated melt temperatures and aggressive clamp tonnages that accelerate tool wear.
Adequate flow channels prevent short shots and weak knit lines in distant details.
Cycle Economics
Solidification time inside an injection mould scales proportionally with the square of the part cross section. Thickening the nominal wall thickness directly inflates cycle times, consuming machine press hours and driving up part piece prices. Conversely, shaving wall depth reduces resin weight per part while slashing required chiller residence times, delivering major procurement savings across high-volume production runs.
Molders optimize this parameter to maximize structural stiffness without paying economic penalties for wasted resin mass.
Sink Formation
Uniform cooling prevents differential thermal shrinkage across adjacent features. When internal design features meet the nominal wall thickness, intersecting ribs must not exceed sixty percent of the main wall depth to avoid localized plastic mass accumulation. Massive localized variations cause severe sink marks, vacuum voids and uncontrolled post-mould warpage.
Preserving wall uniformity maintains predictable dimensional tolerances.
