Meaning
Infrared emission in the two to four micron spectral range originates from a resistance wire coiled inside a high purity silica tube. Heating common resins like ABS, PVC, acrylic and polystyrene is typically handled by a medium wave quartz element. These materials have a natural absorption peak in the medium wave region, meaning they capture this energy more efficiently than short wave radiation.
This efficiency leads to faster heating cycles and lower overall energy consumption in the thermoforming process.
Thermal Behavior
Surface absorption is higher with these heaters, which is beneficial for thin films and materials with low thermal conductivity. Because medium wave quartz emitters operate at a lower filament temperature than halogen lamps, they have a slower response time but provide a more uniform heat distribution. This characteristic is useful for preventing the overheating of sensitive additives or colourants.
The resulting heat soak is often more stable across the entire width of the material.
Processing Range
Adjusting the voltage to the heater allows the operator to tune the output to match the specific needs of different resin grades. Medium wave quartz is particularly effective for heating transparent plastics that might allow shorter wavelengths to pass through without being absorbed. This ensures that the heat is deposited where it is needed most, typically at the surface where forming begins.
The ability to dim these heaters without significantly shifting their spectral peak provides excellent control over the process. By maintaining a consistent temperature, the moulder can avoid the internal stresses that lead to part warpage after the material has cooled.
Mechanical Reliability
Durability in industrial environments is a major benefit of the quartz housing, which protects the internal filament from contamination. While medium wave quartz tubes are more fragile than metal heaters, they offer superior resistance to thermal shock and chemical vapours. Proper support of the tubes is necessary to prevent sagging at high operating temperatures.
Regular inspection for clouding of the quartz helps maintain the radiant efficiency of the oven.
