Meaning
Analytical evaluation simulates the release of lipophilic substances from polymer packaging into fatty foodstuffs using a volatile organic solvent. Performs isooctane migration testing to quickly measure the transfer of plasticizers and oligomers under accelerated conditions. This laboratory method replaces long-term oil exposure tests because the solvent penetrates the polymer structure rapidly, providing an efficient quality control check during production runs.
Solvent Interaction
High chemical affinity between the hydrocarbon solvent and polyolefin matrices drives the rapid extraction of mobile compounds. During isooctane migration testing, the solvent induces swelling in the polymer crystalline regions, which accelerates the diffusion of low molecular weight species. This swelling behavior mirrors the long-term interaction of food-grade plastics with fatty foods.
Accurate temperature control is necessary to prevent the solvent from dissolving the polymer matrix entirely during the exposure period.
Accelerated Evaluation
Exposure duration and temperature settings are calibrated to correspond with standard regulatory food contact scenarios. A short exposure to the solvent at a moderate temperature corresponds to many days of contact with fatty foods at room temperature. This correlation allows quality control teams to quickly determine if an extruded sheet or moulded container meets safety specifications before shipping the batch.
Testing laboratories extract the solvent after the test and weigh the residues to calculate total migration values. When migration values exceed regulatory limits, moulders must adjust additive dosages or change the resin grade.
Melt Control
Moulding conditions such as melt temperature and injection speed determine the crystallinity of the finished part. Lower crystallinity increases the rate of solvent penetration, which leads to higher migration values during testing. Processing parameters must be optimized to maximize polymer density and reduce molecular gaps.
This process control ensures consistent migration test results across different production lots.
