Meaning
Determination of the ash content of polyamides requires standardized calcination procedures to quantify the remaining inorganic filler fraction. The international standard ISO 3451-4 defines the method for burning off the organic polymer matrix to measure the weight percentage of glass fibers or mineral additives. This standard ensures that compounders and molders can verify that the delivered raw material contains the correct reinforcement loading.
Test Method
Polyamide samples are heated in a muffle furnace to temperatures exceeding six hundred degrees Celsius under controlled atmosphere. In accordance with ISO 3451-4, the organic matrix is completely combusted, leaving behind only the inorganic residues. This gravimetric measurement compares the weight of the pre-combustion sample with the remaining ash to determine filler percentage.
Glass Reinforcement
Moulders use this standard to verify the compound specification of incoming glass-filled polyamide resins. A deviation from the specified filler percentage directly alters the mechanical stiffness and impact resistance of the molded product. Testing under ISO 3451-4 confirms whether the batch aligns with the datasheet values provided by the resin supplier.
Analytical Precision
Certain additives like flame retardants or carbon black can complicate the gravimetric result if they do not combust completely or if they volatilize. To ensure precision, ISO 3451-4 requires specific sulfuric acid treatments for certain grades to stabilize the ash residue. This chemical modification prevents the underreporting of glass fiber levels during quality audits.
