Meaning
Solidification occurs at the narrowest point of the feed system when the polymer temperature drops below its transition point. Once gate seal freeze is achieved, the material in the cavity is isolated from the pressure of the injection unit. Precise timing is necessary because this event marks the earliest moment the screw can begin recovery for the next cycle.
Maintaining the hold pressure until this point is reached ensures that no molten plastic flows back out of the part.
Cycle Timing
Determining the exact second of solidification requires a series of part weight measurements at increasing hold times. Before gate seal freeze occurs, each additional second of pressure increases the mass of the part. The weight plateaus once the path is blocked by solid resin.
Part Weight
Variations in the timing of solidification cause inconsistent dimensions and aesthetic flaws. If the process is stopped before gate seal freeze, the part will weigh less and likely exhibit sink marks or internal voids. Stable cooling water temperatures help maintain a consistent freeze point across a production run.
Reliable part mass is the primary indicator that the thermal balance of the tool is being maintained throughout the shift. Operators use these weight measurements to calibrate the holding phase and minimize the energy consumption of the machine.
Cavity Pressure
Pressure sensors inside the mould show a sharp change in the decay curve once the gate closes. This drop confirms that gate seal freeze has occurred and that the internal pressure is now governed solely by the cooling of the trapped polymer.
