Meaning
Tooling configurations used to secure moulded components during secondary finishing operations determine the physical alignment of parts during degating, welding, and assembly. Proper fixture design establishes the necessary spatial orientation to prevent uneven stress distributions from warping the warm, freshly demoulded polymer. It governs the structural alignment across a production run, ensuring that part-to-part variation remains within the narrow tolerances specified on the engineering drawing.
If the fixture is too rigid or poorly aligned, it forces the shrinking polymer into a distorted shape, locking in residual stresses that lead to premature failure.
Structural Stiffness
Holding force must be sustained without flexing the fixture or crushing the polymer during the assembly phase. When fixture design incorporates high-strength aluminum or steel backing plates, the clamping mechanisms cannot deflect under pneumatic loads. This stiffness is necessary for maintaining parallel contact faces on thin-walled enclosures that might otherwise buckle.
A rigid support prevents the warm plastic from twisting as the gates are mechanically sheared.
Dimensional Stability
Thermal expansion of the tooling must be balanced against the high shrinkage rate of the cooling thermoplastic. In fixture design, this is achieved by selecting materials with low thermal expansion coefficients or by matching the thermal expansion of the fixture with the demoulded part. If the fixture expands or contracts excessively during a continuous production run, the part tolerances drift, leading to rejected lots.
Yield Optimization
Minimizing cycle time and scrape rate depends on rapid, repeatable loading and unloading sequences. Good fixture design utilizes contoured nest plates that guide the operator or robot, reducing insertion wear and preventing surface scratches. Quick-change nests allow a single clamping frame to accommodate multiple part geometries, which improves overall plant efficiency and amortizes the capital cost of the tooling.
