Meaning
Separation media in polymer melt filtration systems capture insoluble particulate matter and degraded gel structures from flowing resin streams before shaping downstream. The term filtration residue describes the solid matter accumulated on breaker plates or screen packs during extrusion and injection molding operations. It governs melt purity standards and screen changing frequency, setting the operational limit where differential pressure across the melt filter mandates media replacement to prevent flow restriction.
This physical accumulation halts when raw resin purity reaches absolute solubility or when screen meshes bypass fine contaminants completely.
Accumulation Rate
Continuous extrusion lines press molten thermoplastic through layered wire meshes. Accumulation of filtration residue gradually reduces open filter area, raising discharge pressure. Moulders monitor this pressure drop to schedule filter media changes before screen packs rupture.
Contaminant Origin
Microscopic examination of collected particulate matter identifies contamination sources within virgin resin lots or incoming regrind supply chains. Analysis reveals burnt polymer specks from stagnant barrel zones or foreign inorganic dust. Unmelted filler agglomerates also appear when compounding screws fail to disperse pigments or flame retardants.
Identifying these specific contaminants enables processors to adjust barrel temperature profiles or reject substandard raw material shipments before large-scale production runs suffer structural defects.
Clogging Consequence
Pressure transducers placed directly upstream of breaker plates measure hydraulic resistance changes caused by media clogging. Rapid accumulation of filtration residue indicates severe contamination in virgin resin feedstocks or excessive thermal breakdown within the extruder barrel. When differential pressure doubles relative to initial clean filter values, melt delivery becomes unstable, causing wall thickness variation in extruded pipe, film, or profile geometries.
Automated continuous screen changers advance fresh filter mesh based on pressure threshold triggers to maintain consistent head pressure and prevent complete line stoppages.
