Meaning
A specialized manual probe collects representative material samples from bulk containers holding plastic pellets or powders. Quality control teams insert a double tube sampling lance into gaylords or bulk railcars to extract cross-sectional specimens without unsealing the entire shipping container. The instrument provides vertical profile sampling to detect stratified fines or moisture gradients.
Its application covers free-flowing granular solids, terminating when particle dimensions exceed internal aperture clearance.
Mechanical Action
Concentric metal tubes rotate relative to each other to open and close matching wall apertures along the probe length. Operators push the sealed assembly into the resin bed before turning the inner sleeve to expose internal receiving chambers. Pellets flow simultaneously through multiple openings along the vertical profile into the hollow core.
Reversing the rotation locks the collected material inside the chambers before extraction from the container.
Contamination Risk
Cross-contamination occurs when residual polymer particles remain trapped between concentric wall surfaces from prior sampling events. Scratches on interior sleeve walls harbour moisture and fine particles, corrupting subsequent material assays. Regular disassembly and cleaning prevent false positives during purity testing.
Sample Integrity
Representative sampling prevents processing delays caused by out-of-specification material entering hopper systems. Obtaining core samples across vertical strata ensures moisture content determinations reflect the entire container volume rather than surface conditions. Laboratory tests perform melt flow rate and moisture analysis on these samples to verify supplier certificates.
Proper sampling protocols protect moulders from accepting contaminated batches.
