Meaning
Thermodynamic limit where a moisture-absorbing material has reached its maximum holding capacity under specific temperature and humidity conditions. When managing resin shipments, recognizing desiccant saturation is necessary to ensure that dry pellets do not absorb ambient moisture before they enter the moulding machine.
Absorption Threshold
Solid desiccants like silica gel or molecular sieves lose their ability to capture water vapour once their internal pore structures are filled. After the material reaches desiccant saturation, any additional moisture in the surrounding air remains unabsorbed. This state is reached much faster in hot and humid climates.
Moulding Risk
Wet air in the storage area directly threatens the quality of nylon and polyester resins. Once the protective desiccants are saturated, the polymer pellets quickly absorb the moisture, which leads to foaming and hydrolytic degradation during processing. The resulting parts often display silver streaks on their surfaces and have low impact resistance, rendering them unsuitable for structural automotive or medical applications.
Process Control
Processors run periodic weight checks or use colour-changing indicators to monitor the status of the drying agents. Replacing the saturated media before the polymer is exposed to humid air maintains the integrity of the material feed. This preventative maintenance avoids costly downtime and prevents the production of scrap parts.
